Sinjin by H.P. Mallory
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Sinjin by H.P. Mallory, is a spin off series that comes from the Jolie Wilkins universe. Told from the perspective of Bryn, this first installment seems to act as a bridge between the Mallory's old series and her new one. Bryn was taken captive at the end of the last Jolie book, and is now living under guard at her sister's manor.
Overall, the book is broken up into segments. The first is how Bryn is dealing with being a captive. The second is her adjusting to her 'new' life. The third is Jolie's wedding day.
There are somethings that I like about this novel and others that I don't. I like seeing a continuation of the previous series. I like the "show" parts of the story. Not so much the "tell" parts, they're a bit redundant. It would be nice if Bryn had her own love interest and not Jolie's left over one. I also find Luce's character to be a bit too omnipotent. If he can rape Bryn's subconscious any time he wants for information, what's stopping him from doing that to Jolie? Their both half elemental. Leaving Bryn with her sister seemed to be more of a test of her faith then an intel gathering mission. And I hate to say it, but the end was a bit too predictable in a soap opera / cliche type of way. Lastly, as for Sinjin, there are only two new things to learn about him. One, Bryn's blood has a rare effect on him and two, he doesn't like to deflower virgins. Other than that he's pretty much the same.
